Images make up more than half of the average web page weight, so compressing them is the fastest way to speed up your site and improve the Core Web Vitals Google uses in rankings.

1. Choose the right format

Use WebP by default: it is 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Keep PNG for images that need precise transparency and avoid it for photos.

2. Resize before compressing

Uploading a 4000 px image to display it at 800 px is a huge waste. Set a maximum width that fits your layout — 1200–1920 px is usually enough for hero images.

3. Tune quality wisely

A quality between 70% and 80% is the sweet spot: the eye rarely notices a difference while file size drops dramatically.

4. Enable lazy loading

Add loading="lazy" to below-the-fold images so they only load when needed.
