What is the Word & Character Counter?

This free word counter instantly tells you how many words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences and paragraphs your text contains. It also estimates reading and speaking time and lists your most frequent keywords. It fully supports English, French and Arabic, including diacritics.

How to use the tool

  1. Type your text directly in the box or paste it from any document (Ctrl + V).
  2. Statistics update live as you type — no button to press.
  3. To stay within a limit (160 characters for a meta description, 280 for a post on X), enter it in “Character limit” and a progress bar will turn red when you exceed it.
  4. Check “Top keywords” to see keyword density and avoid keyword stuffing.
  5. You can open a .txt file, copy the text, or clear everything in one click.

Who is it for?

  • Students and researchers who must meet essay and paper word counts.
  • Content writers and marketers optimizing article length, titles and meta descriptions for SEO.
  • Social media users writing posts that respect each platform’s limits.
  • Translators who quote prices per word.

How is reading time calculated?

We use an average reading speed of about 225 words per minute and an average speaking speed of 140 words per minute — common benchmarks used by publishers.

Your text stays private

Everything runs in your browser with JavaScript; your text is never sent to a server. Your last draft is saved locally on your device only, so it is still there when you come back.
