What is the VAT calculator?
Value-added tax (VAT) is an indirect tax applied to most goods and services in many countries. The final consumer pays it, while the seller collects it and remits it to the tax authority. This calculator works both ways: add VAT to a net price to get the gross price, or remove VAT from a gross price to find the net amount and the tax.
How to use it
- Choose a mode: add VAT or remove VAT.
- Enter the amount — net when adding, VAT-inclusive when removing.
- Type the rate or click one of the common presets.
- Enter a quantity to get the total VAT for several items or a whole invoice.
VAT formulas
- Add VAT: VAT = net × rate; gross = net × (1 + rate).
- Remove VAT: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate); VAT = gross − net.
A common mistake is multiplying the gross price by the rate. For a gross price of 115 at 15%, the VAT is 15, not 17.25, because the net is 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100.
Examples of VAT rates
Rates differ by country and can change: some Gulf countries apply 5%, others 15%, many European countries 19% to 21% or more, and reduced rates exist for certain categories. That is why the rate field is freely editable. Always check the official rate for your country and product type.
Why it matters for online sellers
- Display clear, tax-inclusive prices, as consumer laws in many countries require.
- Calculate real profit — VAT is not your revenue but money held for the tax authority.
- Check invoices before filing returns.
- Handle different rates for customers in different countries on global marketplaces.
